Navigating the DRT Outage

FAFSA IRS Data Retrieval Tool Outage

The IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) is currently unavailable and will likely be offline until October 2017. For help navigating the FAFSA without the DRT, download our webinar or read the Q&A below.

What is the IRS Data Retrieval Tool?

IRS DRT allows for a direct, electronic transfer of processed tax information from the IRS into a FAFSA.

Can I still apply for the FAFSA while the IRS DRT is unavailable?

YES! If you are planning on attending college in the 2017-2018 school year you need to file the FAFSA as soon as possible. Use your 2015 taxes for the 2017-2018 FAFSA.  Follow the deadlines of the colleges you are applying to.

What if I don’t have a copy of my 2015 taxes?

You have several options to access the information you need from your 2015 taxes.

  • Access the tax software product you used to prepare and file your 2015 return.  You may be able to access your account to download/print a copy.
  • Contact the tax preparer/provider who filed your 2015 return if you used a tax professional.
  • Download your tax transcript (a summary) at Get Transcript Online.  Review the rigorous identity authentication requirements for Secure Access before attempting to register.
  • Use Get Transcript by Mail and a transcript will be mailed to the address on your return within five to 10 days.
  • Call the IRS automated line at 800-908-9946 to order a transcript by mail.
How will this outage impact me?

If you have not filed the FAFSA you will need to manually enter your tax information into the online application.  The IRS DRT reduces your chances of being selected for verification.  Because this tool is not available your chances for verification selection can be higher.

What is verification?

Verification is when the student and/or parent(s) must submit additional documents to verify the accuracy of information on a FAFSA.

What if I am selected for verification?

About 30% of students are selected for verification.  If you are selected be prompt in your response to financial aid department’s requests for additional information.  Student and/or parent(s) income is a common item selected for verification.  When selected for verification of income, acceptable documentation is the IRS Tax Transcript.

How do I get a copy of my IRS Tax Transcript?

You can order your IRS tax transcript three ways:

  • Download your tax transcript (a summary) at Get Transcript Online.  Review the rigorous identity authentication requirements for Secure Access before attempting to register.
  •  Use Get Transcript by Mail and a transcript will be mailed to the address on your return within five to 10 days.
  • Call the IRS automated line at 800-908-9946 to order a transcript by mail.
